Chalungdo to Nidder trek

Duration of Trek: 04 Days.
Best Time: Mid June to September.
Highest Point: Lungmar-la (5390M)
Focus: High Altitude Landscape and Nomnads
Physical Challenge: Difficult but not technical
Day 1 : Leh to Chalungdo (180 Kms/ 6 Hrs)
Drive by car from Leh to Chalungdo. The pleasant drive along the Indus takes 4 hrs. On the way one can stopp at Chumathang, famous for its Hot Springs. People come here for medical treatment – or washing their laundry. The village of Chumathang is located 2 km further west from the Hot Springs with a small monastery. 3 km behind Mahe Bridge on the way to Tsomoriri and Tsokar one can find several Camping grounds at the river Paldong at an altitude 4.200 m. Overnight in Camp.
Day 2 : Trek Chalungdo to Doksa, 3 hrs.
As this day is not too long for not sleeping in too high altitude, one can take it easy in walking uphill. First you can find a lot of little bushes, but this type of vegetation gets the rarer the higher you climb. One follows a small river and finds many opportunities for camping. We recommend one at a doksa at an altitude of 4.775 m on the right side of the valley, a beautiful place from where one can have a walk into a side-valley. Overnight in Camp.
Day 3 : Trek Doksa via Lungmar-la (5390M) to Camping, 7 hrs.
One has to follow the river higher and higher. The landscape becomes wider and the „real Changthang-feeling“ arises. On the way to the pass the river stopps running and one has to climb up to 5.390 m on the pass Lungmar-la. From there the view is breathtaking. On the right the show-covered peaks of Chalung, Changser Kangi and Lungser Kangri rise high in the sky, far away one gets a glimpse of the lakes of Kyun Tso and towards Tibet to the forbidden parts of the Changthang for Westerners. The downhill is quite steep in loose sand so the other way round wouldn't be a nice option. But from this side it is fun to sometimes jump down towards a small gorge. In the upper part of it, at 4.820 m, is the only place with some water, which can be used as a camping ground. So don't walk too far! Overnight in Camp.
Day 4 : Trek Camping to Niddar, 4 hrs.
Today is an easy, but beautiful walk down, sometimes in the gorge, sometimes on the plateau left to it. At the bottom at 4.390 m one meets the big valley and can see a rough road on the opposite side. But up to the small village of Tsongkar Karu on 4.265 m it is better to stay on the left side. Tsongkar Karu has 16 houses and a small school. Another half hour brings us to Niddar, a slightly bigger village with a middle school and a monastery. There is a road up to Chunur (forbidden for western Tourists), but very rare that cars are going. The Camping in Niddar is on a nice meadow just before the village. Overnight in Camp.

Day 1 : Drive to Saspotse, Trek Saspotse to Shepherds Place, 3-4 hrs.
Drive by car from Leh to Saspotse. The pleasant 65 km drive along the Indus takes around 2 hrs. Saspotse is the village behind Likir on the less driven road to Hemis Schukpachen. Start in the centre of the village on 3.795 m. There is a little gompa in the last but one house of the village on 3.860 m. Continue the path through the valley to the North along the west side of the river Saspol Tokpo. Where there is a river junction on 4.345 m, take the path to the west, continue for an hour and leave it to climb the ridge to the North to reach a shepherds place at 4.500 m. Camp
Day 2 : Trek Shepherds Place to Lago-la Base Camp, 4 hrs.
Set off to the North a little up and down over moraines again along the river Saspol Tokpo. On 4.600 m you come across a dried up lake (called Zingog) which can sometimes be used as a water supply dam. 100 m of altitude higher is a small yellow lake called Tso Sermo. After an hour one comes across an abandoned shepherds place. Just before arriving in the Base Camp which is at a junction of three valleys, one has to cross a river. Camp at 5.000 m with a fine scenery.
Day 3 : Trek Lago-la Base Camp over Lago-la to Rakuruk Doksa, 9 hrs.
Getting higher and higher to the North one comes across the lake Tso Chiang Gongma on 5.180 m and finally reaches the pass Lago-la on 5400 m after 2,5 – 3 hrs. after departure. From here one has a great view over the Zanskar range to the South and the Saltoro Range to the North. For the descend one first has to cross a little glacier/snowfield, depending on time of year and snowfall. In the end the snow turns into water and gurgles down the valley to turn into a river named Rhakura. On 5.100 m one comes across a huge valley of violet flowers. To get down quite a bit to lower altitude one has to leave several camping possibilities and arrives slowly to an old shepherds place called Rakuruk Doksa at the junction of two valleys. On the last decades some landslides brought down huge boulders which covered the old track and were quite dangerous for horses. But there has been a lot of work down by making the track easier for the horses and also put up stone piles to navigate following trekking group for the best way through the boulders. Camp at 4.720 m after a last river-crossing (there have been 2-3 before, too).
Day 4 : Trek Rakuruk Doksa to Rakuruk, 4,5 hrs.
One follows down the Rakuruk river on the west side down along small pastures, gets glimpses of other valleys leading into the mountains and comes across a huge variety of vegetation. Finally one arrives in the small village of Rakuruk, containing of seven houses and being located at an elevation of 4.040 m. Lots of water sources make the village a very flowerful one besides the barley- and green-pea-fields and the vegetable gardens.
Day 5 : Trek Rakuruk to Skuru, 3,5 hrs.
The sides of the river narrow until it becomes a small gorge where one has to follow the small path high above the gurgling water. One has to be free of fear of heights and must be sure-footed. The gorge opens into the Nubra Valley at the small village of Skuru with around 300 inhabitants at an altitude of 3.150 m. Here one can do camping or take a room at one of the family houses.
Day 6 : Drive back the ca. 150 km via Khardong-la to Leh or use the chance to discover more of the Nubra Valley visiting the beautiful villages of Hundar, Deskit, Sumur etc.

Duration of Trek: 06 Days.
Best Time: Mid June to September.
Highest Point: Choku La (5,560m)
Focus: Landscape, Peaks, People Villages and High Altitude Lake
Highlight: Chumathang Hotspring, Chokula High peaks & Pass, Nomads and Yaya Tso
Physical Challenge: High Altitude Trek, Challenging
Day 1 : Drive by car from Leh to Chumathang.
The pleasant drive along the Indus takes 3.5 – 4 hrs. Chumathang is famous for its Hot Springs. People come here for medical treatment – or washing their laundry. The village of Chumathang is located 2 km further west from the Hot Springs with a pleasant campground at a big farmhouse. You can either visit the monastery in the afternoon or in the morning. It is 20 min by walk from the camping
Day 2 : Trek Chumathang to Gangra, 5 hrs.
Set off in Chumathang, 4.050 m, walk through the village and follow up the valley north. The path is easy to find as many shepherds use this trail to go for the high pastures with their animals. You will find some of their places on their way. Also it is very likely to see some wildlife as marmots and blue-sheep. As one treks up following the Chumathang river there is no scarcity of water and plenty of camping possibilities. Our choice Gangra is located at 4.630 m with a fine scenery.
Day 3 : Trek Gangra to Sumdo, 4 hrs.
Today is just a short walking-day, but you won't regret it as the camping is set in such a fine scenery, that one has enough time to explore it or just relax in the sun. The trail leads still along the Chumathang river from 4.630 m up to 5.140 m. Sumdo, the goal of the day, is a junction of three valleys. As oxygen is getting less, one has to walk very slowly. But time enough to spot some of the many marmots and maybe some Kyangs (wild ass). Sumdo is also a favorite place for big herds of Yak.
Day 4 : Trek Sumdo over Choku-la to Phayalung, 8 hrs.
As this is quite a tough day as one has to cross the 5.560 m high pass Choku-la, it is advised to start early in the morning. We climb over a ridge and follow the high valley to the east of Sumdo, reach an even higher valley and find a small and unremarkable pass without prayer-flags in the very east of this valley. This is the highest point of this trekking and one has a superb view along the surrounding mountains and valley. After that it goes slowly down, plateau after plateau, each being dominated by a beautiful lake. We have to climb over a ridge again to finally reach a shepherds place at 5.200 m, which is fine for a camping.
Day 5 : Trek Phayalung to Yayatso, 5 hrs.
While walking further down, one passes several shepherds places, walks along a refreshing river crosses a desert-plateau with a big Lhato and reaches a small lake with a gorge on the left side. Passing this gorge one gets a fine view to the big blue Yayatso with its surrounding short meadows, grazing goats and yaks and the small village of Yaya, containing of seven houses, on the east side of the high valley. Situated on 4.700 m the Yayatso is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Changthang area. Camp next to one of the several small rivers leading to Yayatso and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere with men and animals living adjusted to natures conditions.
Day 6 : One could trek over another 4.800 m pass to Mahe, but as there is a road, it is nicer to set off by car. On the way to Mahe visit the famous nunnery which has more than 100 nuns in Mahe monastery. In Mahe you have the choice to go on further into Changthang area either to newly opened area of Nyoma and Muth and/or Tsomoriri/Tsokar Lakes or drive back to Leh.
Trek end.
Anmo to Serchu Trek
(Tour No 10)
Duration of Trek: 06 Days.
Best Time: Mid June to September.
Highest Point: Phitse La (5,582m)
Focus: Landscape, Peaks and People Villages
Highlight: People, villages, high pastureland and Landscape
Physical Challenge: High Altitude Trek, Challenging
Day 1 : Drive to end of road, Trek Anmo to Cha, 2.5 hrs.
Drive by car from Padum to the end of the road (in 2012 it was until short before Anmo). An early start gives time for sightseeing of some of the gompas on the way like Bardan and Mune. At the end of the road meet the horses and start on the left side of the river. The path leads high above the river through small villages/houses. Finish the first trekking day in the district main quarter of Cha, a bigger village on 3.900 m You can choose if you want to put up the tent or prefer one of the comfortable homestays to experience a little more the life of the villagers.
(If you want, you can add a day here trekking to Phuktal with its famous Gompa and walk back to Purne, walking-time around 4 hrs. total, giving enough time to explore the monastery. The walking-time of the next day will be 1 hr less)
Day 2 : Trek Cha to Tangtse, 6,5 hrs.
Go down to the bridge, cross the river and climb up again. The path leads you high above the river through the villages of Yal, Testa und Kuru. It is nice and easy walking. Just before Tangtse there is again a small bridge to cross the river. Tangtse is a village on around 4.000 m with 4 x 3-4 houses close together and huge fields around. There is an empty gompa high above the village.
Day 3 : Trek Tangtse to Zinchen, 4 hrs.
Follow the path on the same side of the river until you reach after 1-1.5 hrs. Thabley, which consists of 2 houses. There you enter a gorge leading up into the mountains. Stay mostly on the left side, but sometimes you have to cross (when not too much water easy done by jumping). Then leave the gorge on a high path leading over ridges and back to the river at Zinchen at 4.600 m. You can either pitch your tent there or go a little higher, but there are only small spots for 2-3 tents.
Day 4 : Trek Zinchen via Phitse-la to Churmik Marpo, 8-9 hrs.
Get up very early as the way towards and over the pass is quite long. Just keep on following the river up to a nice place for a rest on 5.175 m at the bottom of the pass. The climb is a little steep until the top of the 5.582 m high Phirtse-la. There you have a spectacular view around. Find the proper path leading slowly downwards until you reach a broader valley called Churmik Marpo at 4.750 m. Camp there.
Day 5 : Trek Churmik Marpo to Umlung, 5,5 hrs.
Follow the river down on the left side. You see many marmot-holes, but rarely you spot these shy animals. Before the rivers runs into a small gorge, you have to cross it either on horseback or through the water. Continue on that side until the river flows into the bigger Lingti-River at Kham Kherab. There you have to cross again. Kham Kherab is at 4.470 m and from there it is more or less flat walking with only short ascents and descents. There are plenty camping-possibilities along the Lingti-River. We suggest to go until Umlung at 4.440 m.
Day 6 : Trek Umlung to Sarchu, 4 hrs.
You continue walking on the right side of the Lingti-River (in the Olizane-map there is a path on the other side, too, which is wrong). At a junction you could decide to have a long way to Killang Serai, but could continue for sure just to Sarchu. There you meet the Tsarap River, which has to be crossed and after that you reach Sarchu at 4.300 m with a lot of Dhabas, who offer food and night-shelter. Or you just continue by road either to Leh or Keylong.

Getting higher and higher to the North one comes across two more lakes at 5.100 m. The scenery is really spectacular with vast rock-areas including beautiful lakes, higher peaks and passes on three sides and some glaciers very close by. The last 100 m of alttude to the pass are quite steep over loose rocks and one needs Schwindelfreiheit und Trittsicherheit. Especially with groups and horses one has to take care of stone-falls and small landslides. Finally the pass is reached and offers great views to all sides. On the north-side is a glacier-field of around 1 km without crevasses to cross and go down. The terrain after that is first quite loose with rocks and exhausting to walk, but later it becomes better and a path more abvious. The first Camping-possibility is at 5.030 m, but one can continue a bit as there are more possibilities every half walking hour.
Day 4 : Trek Base Camp to Spangmarmo, 5-6 hrs.
Always following the Spangmarmo river, sometimes on the west-, sometimes on the east side, one gets slowly lower. The path is still clear and changes between grass, boulder-areas and rocky flats. The river-crossings can be done without wading through – at least in late August. While going down one gets glimpses into other valleys. There is a rare wildlife to spot, but quite some Yaks belonging to the people from the lower villages. So some Doksas are inhabitet by people collecting the dung as burning-material for the winter. Spangmarmo is such a Doksa. One can camp a little further away at 4.550 m.
Day 5 : Trek Spangmarmo to Yokma Lhargyab, 5 hrs.
Still going down on the west side of the river one can spot in the distance the village Gongma Lhargyab with approx. 20 houses. A primary school and a small gompa-room. One has to take care not to miss the way leading down to the bridge in the beginning of the village. Afterwards there is a second bridge to cross another river coming down from the mountains. Just before the village of Yokma Lhargyab is a camping-possibility at 3.940 m
Day 6 : Trek Yokma Lhargyab to Pachathang, 3 hrs.
First one should take the possibility to discover a bit more of Yokma Lhargyab, one of the rare ladakhi places, where buddhist families keep chicken and the middle school consist of 11 children. The quality is not so bad for a government-school as they have really good and dedicated teachers, singing with them every morning „We shall overcome“! They are happy to experience a little their english with foreigners. The last bit of this trek leads along a gorge towards the muslim village of Pachathang. Pachathang is 3.500 m of altitude and a small vivid village with lots of children. Crossing the there very deep and steep gorge by a bridge one reaches a non-tarred road of 7 km going down to meet the Nubra-Valley ar 3.100 m
Day 7 : Drive to Leh 150 km via Khardong-la or use the chance to discover more of the Nubra Valley, especially going to the most western village of Turtuk, belonging to Pakistan until 1971 and having a balti culture there. It is a village on only 2.880 m with two crops a year (second is buckwheat), a mosque from the 16th century and a little buddhist gompa maintained by buddhist employees living in that village. Houses and people look quite different from rest of Ladakh so it is a little like glimpsing into another country. Also with the military camps and the military airport in Thoise one can experience the special situation of Ladakh lying so close to the Pakistan-border. Afterwards for sure one could visit at least the beautiful villages of Hundar and Deskit in the Nubra-Valley.

Pitch your tent at this beautiful place
Day 3 : Trek Digar-la Base Camp to Chumik Yogma, 6,5 - 7 hrs.
The right valley is yours. Climb up while following the stream, but don't miss the Zig-zag-path towards the left leading to the pass. It takes quite some time to get up to the pass which appears closer then it is. But the view is always great and getting with every step more spectacular. Digar-la is 5.435 m high and offers great views to North and South. The walk down along the river goes slowly via many miniplateaus. There are many possibilities of pitching the tent – Chumik Yogma is a very beautiful one. Sleep on an altitude of 4.780 m.
Day 4 : Trek Chumik Yogma to Khyema, 7 hrs.
Going down one of the most beautiful high altitude valleys of Ladakh. Quite broad it offers great views to the opposite mountain range while descending slowly mostly on green gras along the river. See Dzos and maybe some Yaks grazing, marmots peeping out of their holes and listen to the singing of birds. After 1,5 to 2 hours you spot the wide spread fields of Digar village. Digar is approx. 4.000 m high. The small Gompa is not always open and you have to search for someone with the key. When looking to the west, you can spot Tangyar and the valley leading towards Nebuk-la. Down to Kungru is a road with nearly no cars, but there are lots of short-cuts to go. In Kungru on 3.630 m walk up the not-tared road to the most beautiful located village of Khyema at 4.140 m.
Day 5 : Khyema to Tangyar, 6 hrs.
From Khyema you have to climb on a Zig-Zag-Path to the Khyema-la pass (4.620 m) and walk down the trail to the road. Follow it down to Tangyar. Unfortunatly there is this approx. 3 km road to walk, which leads to the Wari-la, but it is very very few cars to drive there, so it is not too bad. The beautiful scenery and the encounters with the locals in this quite rare visited villages add to the pleasure in visiting the western part of Nubra Valley. Tangyar has a spectacular located small monastery and has beautiful old houses nestled at the foot of it. Camp on a meadow on 3.870 m.
Day 6 : Trek Tangyar to Jukthey, 5-6 hrs.
To find the path out of the village is a little tricky, but just keep up the river and take the left path of it when reaching the bridge. And then walk just up, up and up until the reached the beautiful camp of Jukthey at 4.930 m with a small spring. When looking back you can spot Digar and the way you have already trekked.
Day 7: Jukthey to Rale, 7 hrs.
Trek up to the side-valley on the right and continue until you find the start of a zig-zag-path (not so easy to spot – watch out for stone piles) leading to the pass. The Nebuk-la is quite broad at an altitude of 5.385 m and offers great views to the spectacular scenery back and in front of you. Walk down the valley and follow the river on the left side on an obvious path. It leads towards another valley to the right. Close to the junction you find a small Doksa (shepherds hut). From here to Rale it is possible to walk on both sides of the river. Pitch your tent on 4.415 m a little before reaching Rale.
Day 8: Rale to Durbuk (Zanmo raod), 4 hrs.
Take your time walking through Rale, maybe visit the small village government school, have a chat with the villagers – it is a nice located place with people being involved in farming and husbandry. Continue the path on the right river-side, reach a small pass at 4.050 m, spot some old petroglyphs and walk down to meet people working on a road to Rale. In 2014 it was far from being accomplished. Down to Zanmo it is dusty, but OK to walk – in Zanmo better to ask the car to get you from there as the 4 km tared road to Durbuk are not really pleasant through military area.
In Durbuk you could head for a nice hot shower in the nearby hotel in Tangtse or you continue directly to the Pangong lake. Or, if time is too limited, just head back to Leh via the Chang-la.

Colorful wild flowers on the way are visually pleasant in the exhausting climb to the top, where the trail divides into two, one going to the left leading towards Tsokar lake and one on the right takes you to a stream, crossing which another pass to climb is there. It is little hard to trace the path for some distance from where the clear trail leads to the top of Mandalchan la (4996m). The Camping site is just at the end of the Lake, before the river. There is no toilet facility.
Day 03 Kyangdam to Skitpodangsa (4563m) or Nurboo Sumdo (4-5 hrs.

Pass through spring (Chumik Sharte) and the campsite is a deep ground near the river and spring. You can also camp at Skitpodangsa on the another side of the Parangchu but water level can be high in the afternoon if you are trekking in the month of early August or July.
Day 04 Skitpodangsa or Nurbo Sumdo to Getpabuzak (4600m) 5-6 hrs.
If you camp at Nurboo Sumdo don’t forget to carry sandal with you for water crossing. The river is full of small pebbles, which hurts your feet without sandal. Day 07 Kharsagongma to Takkarzong (4850m) via Parang La (5588m)
Cross the river immediate after leaving the Camp. Take the trail from your left hand side and the right side of the glacier. As you walk upwards, craves become very narrow from where you can cross the glacier. Start walking towards southeast and after around 3 hours walking you can see colourful prayer flags flapping at the top of the Pass. Take the steep descent to the campsite near huge rock and the waterfalls from it. But in end of September and October water dries up, therefore you have to carry water from the Parang base.
Day 08 Takkarzong to Thangltak (4500m) 4-5 hrs.
It’s vertical walking down to the Parangchu and remains walking at the same level along the Paranghu to the east for sometimes before you take another exhausting Climb to Thangltak. Thangltak has very nice campsite with a wonderful view of the mountains and spring water. Kibber is just another 3 hours walk from here.
Day 09 Thangltak to Kibber 3 hrs.
